It was time, Amy. The frogs and nymphaea had been in "temporary" quarters for too long. What started the whole hole thing was two Dwarf Alberta Spruce that I had also put in "temporarily" and they were encroaching on each other so I had to move at least one of them... went to start digging for the shrub and came upon some rather large rocks...so I dug around the first and found the second rock...and by then the hole was getting rather large and deep...then came the ah-hah moment. brought out the pump from my basement and emptied the "temporary" frog pond... the water was excellent fertilizer for my newly divided irises and some other transplants.. saved a couple of buckets to hold the waterlily (temporarily) and dragged the liner to the new site. Phew! Then I did some more digging...and placed the liner in the hole with the shrub beside it...chocked in some new soil and amendments and watered it down.. filled the new Pond with pail after pail from the rain barrels. I thought that my nymphaea was dead after the beastly winter freeze and thaw..but to my surprise it had trebled in size and had roots as thick as sweetpotatoes! Jeepers! The pond that I thought was going to be too large...wasn't large enough.
Gave up... filled the thing to the top and saw my work running away like there was a huge hole. turns out the hole was near the edge and not very large... so we're stalled and the plants are in the pond "temporarily". Froggies have found it though. Good thing because it was beginning to look like I'd made a terrific mosquito hatchery! Yeah. Well.
