C. gigantea is a perennial forming a clump of pinnately lobed basal leaves, with tall, branched stems carrying light yellow flower-heads to 6cm across in summer. It likes moist rich soil in sun or light shade.

That is a shame Karen. It is my favourite scabious and at 6' tall makes quite a statement in the border. I got it from a neighbour who was getting rid of it as he said it grew like a weed. It is very well behaved in our garden so I think soil conditions must matter to how it does.
I agree 3d. I was very impressed when I first saw it growing.

Thank you Pcw. My mind was not on the job. Thank goodness I got it right on the edited photo.

Yes it's unusual too.

It seems to be a love it or thoroughly dislike it plant. Away back in 2009 Owdboggy described a plant he had just dug up as a thug in his garden with roots going down forever. Dottydaisy liked it and said it popped up all over the place in her garden. You can read more comments from members by clicking on their photos in Goypedia (a-z at the foot of this page). It is under "C" and you need to scroll through the photos to find the name. I have had it in my garden since the late 1980's and never found it be a thug or spread around by self seeding.

I am in the 'love it' camp, for now anyway. This is the 3rd year for them and each year they have grown taller. This year two plants were 2m! The others about 1.50m. I love the fact that they are always swarming with insect life and the flowers are beautiful. However they are such big plants that they definitely need the right position in the border as they shade out anything else growing nearby. So this autumn I'll dig up the 2 tallest ones, it'll be interesting to see their roots and check out owdboggy's comments re roots going down forever. I've not had them selfseeding everywhere like dottydaisy's.
