Hi Amy! when I cleared away the ash seedlings I found a small grove of beech, wild cherry and cornus; which was being choked out by the ash. it's approx 5 trees in a row. there's also a basswood (lime) and a young maple in the group. The cornus is established along the forest margin in 3 places on the south east facing side of the valley...the north east facing side has hazelnuts and young apple trees. I'm reasonably sure that most were planted by nature. (except perhaps the larger apple trees) this time of year holds all kinds of revelations!

You are so lucky to have the room and to be able to come across such treasures Lori , In my previous garden I found a tiny English Elm which as you may know became almost extinct here , it was in a tree line of dead elms ,I nurtured it over the 23 years of us living there it was a good strong young tree by the time we left ,I absolutely hate the idea that the new owners could have chopped it down not knowing what it was :o(

oh ...that's dreadful. although it would add another layer of complications to the nightmare of realestate I've often thought that we who are stewards and gardeners should be allowed (if so inclined) to present a list of bequests. we could list anything related to the garden/property we are leaving to posterity. It would explain a lot to new people so that they didn't go ahead and chop everything up. then again, some egotists could not conceive of someone having a better 'plan' than theirs. 23 years is a serious investment..and with trees..time is the only arbiter.
