DD - there are a few things you need to know about heleniums. Firstly, they need a soil that doesn't dry out. Secondly, slugs love the shoots of young plants. I've been growing them inside copper rings and and little b*ggers haven't found a way in yet. Once the clumps become established, this becomes less of a problem. Thirdly, most varieties grow five to six feet tall and benefit from a Chelsea chop, reducing them by half to two thirds. If we get a dry summer, half is sufficient - you have to make a calculated guess in May!
