Prickly Pear Cactus

Prickly Pear Cactus

Fire Island, NY Not what I expected to see on Fire Island. Apparently it's doing very well. Completely edible cactus.

I haven't tried it, removing the spines is tricky.

LOL They teach you the 'shake shake shake' at bartending school. You have to move your hands in sync with your booty lol. Then you get $ $ $ in tips.

Interesting plant. I also wonder what the taste would be like? I do like a cocktail, so, maybe spike free in a lovely glass of something alcoholic? It would take some time removing the spiny spikes though.

Sorry, you did say melon flavour. Sounds flavoursome with any drink.

If you hold the 'pear' over a flame for a second, the spikes will disappear. Then just use a vegetable peeler. Another way is to slice it in half and use a spoon. It's very sweet. I see prickly pear sorbet in your future. The leaves are normally used in savory dishes.
