We thought it was rather special - surprised to see it out in daylight. Newly hatched? (is that the right term??) It was happy to sit on my hand.

and it is indeed a privet hawk moth. The term is newly emerged from pupation. Hatching is from the egg.
Paul have you seen my bog bean blog. I have photos of another hawk moth that was in my garden 2 days ago, the poplar hawk moth.
