thanks, Amy! our spring was so cold and for a while I couldn't find the JITP... suddenly there it was! the moss on the stumps is drying ... one minute cold and wet.. next hot and dry. it looked wonderful for a while..

I guess because it really is, Amy. it's one of the things that comes from nature unbidden. on any piece of dead wood, here, you can find a number of recyclers at work.. mosses, lichens, beetles, beetle larvae, ants, fungi, ants that live on fungi, there is even a type of slime mould which is a brilliant orange red and looks like orange jello oozing out of the cracks in the bark of dead fir trees!
