I think this is the variety of rhus you have in your spice cabinet, Amy. It is native to southern California and northern Mexico...It's leaves are leathery, and it produces berries much larger than the ones on my type and it does not resemble the rhus that grows in my area I have Rhus tryphina or staghorn sumach, the stems and branches and leaves are hairy resembling a stags horn in velvet. I didn't realize how many types of rhus there are (over 250, aparently and related to cashews!). It grows mostly in the tropics, but extends into the temperate zone in NA.

Lovely combination, Lori. It’ll be nice to see it change colour in autumn too.
