The alpine bed covered to stop the plants getting waterlogged and then frozen during the winter. In the wild, they would be safe under buried a layer of snow

I see you have plenty of bricks on top of your frame. My lid, over my scree bed (open sided) blew off last night. Replaced and put more bricks on this morning.

Good idea.
This last winter we built a plastic tent trying to save the Tibouchina Mutabilis, unsuccessfully. The cold weather and frosts burnt it to the ground. Using wood might help.
