Thanks Anget and Kate . . . I ignored the very dark Acers as I have failed with them in the past. Tempted though . . . :o)

Shirley, my tallest acer started off a dark burgundy - acer Palmatum.
Year on year it has gradually lost all the burgundy colour - well all but a few new leaves growing at the base - and it is now more or less a green leaf.

Kate, I was intrigued by that so did some research and found this info:

This problem is caused by shade. A maple such as Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' is naturally purple but the underlying colour is green. It turns purple in response to sunlight - remove the sun and the foliage reverts to green. So prune it within the next three months and let more light in.

I would never have thought that!
