Gethyum atropurpureum - 2022 (Gethyum atropurpureum)

This bulb from Chile is never going to win any beauty prizes - "interesting" rather beautiful. Grows to 12 inches in well-drained soil in a sunny position. Needs to be kept dry in the winter, also in the summer, but needs moisture in the spring. Oh, and it's pollinated by flies so not a very pleasant odour either.

You've triggered my memories of Stapelia gigantea, AndrewR. The owner of the house we rented in Mexico had several of them in the pots on the terrace and I was intrigued by bluebottle flies frenzy dance around the blooms. It was the first time I heard about the "stinky" plants and flies as pollinators.

beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I love the colour of this. fly pollination is always interesting.
