This is a paphiopedillum (sp?) slipper orchid? what a beautiful colour. Do you have a solarium? I have mostly Phalaenopsis... on the advice of a fellow goY member I made a shade porch for my orchids...I'm hoping they will reward me with a flush of blossom in the winter...

You have a good eye, Sandygrove. That is a lovely picture... the orchid is a "slipper" orchid, a paphiopedyllum (I'm not sure of that spelling) it is the same type of orchid as the Lady's Slipper (wild orchid) which is the floral emblem of Prince Edward Island. As exotic as they look, some orchids are quite tolerant of house conditions... and will bloom in a bright room (I've even seen them in offices). If you are thinking of buying an orchid (or even if you have one) there's always room for one more!...I'd suggest buying a phalaenopsis (moth orchid) they are quite happy in the home and will reward you with lovely blossoms that last for months!! And there is tons of info on the web about their care. Cheers!
