I sowed these in June 22 and planted them out at the start of last autumn. Some of the plantings last year did not go well as we had a very, very dry summer. However, later plantings and those over-wintered in the cold frame have done well. This is the first to flower. (sorry it is not a great photo but I did not want to 'manhandle' it too much!)

Thank you, Shirley Tulip.
I had to remove a flower bud on one of the others today as the leaves were looking a bit shabby. I am not sure if this is down to the awful weather recently or if it is just not strong enough to bear a flower yet? I know that it is not recommended to allow them to flower in their first year, but I was too tempted to let at least one flower. In any case, this is their first flowering season in the ground but they were in pots last year, so I am not sure how important it is for these ones.
I suppose better to judge it on a plant by plant basis.
