Karen, this might explain it!
Bosham was an important medieval port in Chichester Harbour. The Romans used the harbor as a port, and there's evidence of pre-Anglo-Saxon activity in the area, including pottery and tile fragments.
There is also a Roman Palace at Fishbourne with fabulous mosaics.
