You may wish to be looking for spring bulbs which have just arrived in stores and garden centres at the moment. They will be easily sourced in the early autumn but not so easily later on. Many can be grown in pots or containers which you can position in the garden when you have a design in mind.
Please bear in mind that a garden is an ever developing project which will need constant monitoring and tending, it is rather like bringing up children in that it is an ongoing activity ( once a parent, always a parent) in which the best is invariably somewhere in the future. However, like parenting, there are many rewards to be had on the way.
