This is weird! It's an epiphyte that will grow in the ground. Because it extracts moisture from the atmosphere, it can take very dry positions. It will not take much frost but if it is growing in the shelter of another plant (mine is hard against a large phormium), it comes through the winter unscathed. Most of the year the leaves are green but when it starts to flower (the grey blob in the centre), the leaves turn bright red
