Hi Hywel and Irish: Oh! I had no idea this was a uniquely American thing...! Indian corn is used to decorate during Fall, especially during October and November, when there's the Thanksgiving holiday. Many people put it on the front door. I think it's supposed to symbolize plenty (the harvest and all) and also, during Thanksgiving, the corn that the Native American Indians gave the Pilgrims.

Pumpkins and other squashes are also very popular, and placed by the front door. Some people go berzerk and get a bunch of pumpkins, which you can find in orange, red-orange, white and gray/green. If I get one I usually get just one. Other favorite foods that I have adopted during this season are: unfiltered apple cider, pumpkin pie, and visits to a pumpkin patch - or failing that, a visit to a garden center with a ton of pumpkins for sale!

I hope this helps! Geez you can tell I've lived in the States for 28 yrs, huh? =)

Hi Irish, now I'm guilty of thinking every place is the same..sorry! Pumpkins are big business here, and you start seeing them early October, they're available until late November. Since the weather in Houston is quite warm, I won't get one until closer to Halloween...and hopefully it'll last till Thanksgiving. I don't want it to rot on me..

you going to scoop the flesh out, carve it and put candles inside ?

I'd love to, in fact I think a pumpkin carving party would be fun, but alas! I have no time...so my pumpkin will probably remain uncarved. =(
