Galanthus nivalis

Galanthus nivalis (Galanthus nivalis)

The obligatory common-or-garden snowdrop; I just can't get excited about all the different ones. I started with just one clump of these and have gradually dug the original clump up and moved some of them all round the garden. Not the first early bulb to flower for me - narcissus 'Cedric Morris' always beats it by one or two weeks

I love snowdrops - when we arrived with the furniture van exactly 3 years ago, we had a wonderful surprise because our sellers also loved them and they had planted great drifts everywhere!

Snowdrops are my favourite flowers (not tulips, strangely enough).
One of the best displays I've seen to date is in the woodland of the Rococo Gardens, Painswick, Gloucestershire - a carpet of white in the most perfect of settings. Apparently, years gone by, on a certain day of the year, village children were allowed to come and pick bunches of snowdrops to take home to their mothers - what a lovely story.
