Cotinus coggygria 'Golden Spirit' (Cotinus coggygria 'Golden Spirit' (Smoke bush))

The same plant in now - and sure enough, it has turned a rather stunning shade of red. Very pleased :-) It's still sat in its pot for now - I've just dumped it in the border to make a splash of colour!

So not fair! mine did'nt do this at all! the leaves on mine just turned a pale lemon colour and all dropped off! Pooh - i am going to go and sulk now! lol so whats your secrite? do you have acid soil? mine is acid but my 'golden spirit has'nt made it into it as yet, as it will be in the bed where i am still putting up trellis, hopefully should be finished by the end of next week and i will be able to get it into the ground, and hopefully will do this next year. yours is lovely Sid, i am very jellous! lol

Oh dear - sorry Ang! Re the soil - it's actually still in its pot, so I don't know if that's the reason. The pale lemon yellow sounds nice tho ;-)
Hope yours puts on a show for you next year - maybe it's something to do with the light levels it has received? Only bought mine in late summer, but it was in full sun after that (when it was out!?) I will be putting mine next to the fence on the sunny side of the garden - I have a lot of work to do first tho as several shrubs to get rid and also lots of invasive geranium - not looking forward to it!

I wonder if the difference in colours was something to do with frost? over here we get our best colours when the trees have had enough moisture all summer and the first frost is a cracker! Then we see lots of reds and very bright yellows... as for the cotinus, I'm envious of both of you...I wish I had bought one years ago. lady down the street has one that's about twelve feet tall, bushy and covered with frothy, smoky bloom every year, she has had to prune it back this fall...the branches where about an inch thick. the foliage turned a lovely red orange just before the leaves fell!

Don't know Lori - can't think now whether we had had a frost when I took the photo.......
