i have a pic on my homepage , someone identified it for me then.

Aye think you could be right Irish thousands of insects difficult to be specific about exact specimen.My only other thought could be leafhopper esp if you grow rhododendrons.

Just had a look (Wikipedia) sorry Irish it is not a shield bug..........the markings totally different

ah well lol , ive googled birch shield bug, looks like similar markings to your pic
