This gate was off of a alley way which lead to a church in Bienen Germany where a plaque has been placed in honour of the North Nova Scotia Highlanders killed there in WW II. The gate was a driveway for a private home. I do not recall what the garden inside looked like.

the microclimate thing has always interested me...walled gardens have been around in Europe since the early middle ages, would like a nice eight-foot brickwall. with an enticing arched gate. and maybe espaliered fruit trees inside... would be interesting to chronicle the effects in this colder temperate zone climate.. I have seen somewhere(??) pictures of a garden inside the confines of a derelict barn...the first floor stone walls still stand and an enterprising gardener was using the remnants of animal habitation in the soil inside the walls and establishing plants of questionable hardiness. Must try looking that up in my notes so I can get the details right. Interesting idea though, aye?

I want to build a garden wall... This picture is quite amazing..Is the area behind the gate an enclosed garden? I'm a fellow Canadian...it is such a joy to see all the pictures of the lovely Brit-gardens, I envy them and the Europeans their climate at this time of year.
