This area at the rear of our house, was once part of South Kirkby Colliery, when we bought the house twenty years ago there was some gigantic earthwork that acted as a sound barrier between us and the Pit. 1984 came and went. The earthwork has been removed, Pit Tips have been landscaped, a mile away from us is a uphill, is a huge lake. The field to the rear of us, which was nice and level, but now it has big humps in it to provide excitement and imagination for children, except that parents are too scared to let kids play there. A thousand little "whips" of trees were planted, you can see that they are now a reasonable size and are being colourful. Our pit may have died, our community may have died, but we have trees, and wildlife is coming back, we have squirrel, fox, rabbit, hawk, the inivitalbe mice and rats, wild flowers, dog walking area. AND it is beautiful, we are lucky to sit in bed and drink coffee in the mornings so that we can admire our view.

It's a wonderfull view.
There's an old colliery not far from here where my grandfather was killed in an accident many yrs before I was born.
A few yrs ago they planted trees there like this one where you live. My Dad, my brother and his boys and me all went to plant one in memory of him.
Maybe I'll put a photo of the place one day.
It's good that these old derelict places are being regenerated now.
You must live in a beautiful place.

Wonderful description of part of UK history - thank you. The view is lovely and the wildlife sounds great even if it is at the expense of people and the community. Such a shame about the level of fear parents have for their children today. I'm glad I'm not young anymore!

A lovely view, a big improvement I'm sure over what was there, but it's sad that the community has died along with the mine. We have to be so adaptable these days, as individuals and as communities, life and circumstances move and change so fast. And yes you're so right, Magnoliatree, we had so much more freedom years ago as children to have fun, have accidents and suffer scraped knees, learn from them and grow.
