Before central heating, I remember as a young girl in Cheshire that the only font of heat was the coal fire in the living room and the rest of the house would be freezing. When visitors came there would be joy at the visit but an inward groan as hospitality meant that my sister and I would have to give up the settee that was in front of the grate and be relegated to the colder part of the room. Whereas now in this little haven of mine, I have the best of both worlds - a friendly crackling fire AND warm radiators throughout the house !!
