New bud showing. This is a performer at my house, blooms three or four times a year. Not the prettiest bloom, but nice and reliable.

Those are air roots. The orchid drinks water and gains nutrients from the air, a epiphytic behavior. This is why they demand more humidity. The thicker leaves types lie the cattleya or this hybrid can take a dry spell a little better than the thinner leaved varieties. Paphiopedulum or Phaleonopsis are two I'd recommend for easier forgiving maintenance....lol.
