The wallabies come in almost every day (when we have some green grass) and do a pretty good job of mowing.

Yes they are wild Spritzhenry and will take off very quickly at the slightest noise - one of them is presently proving to be a bit more trusting than the others and seems to be getting used to my presence. I haven't noticed them eating anything else except the grass. They are great to watch and I love it when the mothers come in with their joeys in the pouch. Will have to post a photo of that next.

Well Marguerite we get them all the time - usually around five or six turn up in the yard throughout the summer when it's raining.

They take off too quickly for me to even attempt to catch one - but they are the cutest thing to watch, especially when there are joeys.

MUCH more interesting than rabbits! We do get badgers - but in the night so I don't get to see them. They are NOT lawnmowers, they act like a demolition gang and churn the grass up looking for worms and grubs. :-(

Are they coming freely in your garden!? That's sounds wonderful!!

Hi Japanesepeach - yes these wallabies come into our yard whenever they please. They come to eat the grass (and the portulacas!) and we see them almost every day during the summer and autumn when the surrounding bush gets very dry and sparse.

That sounds so much fun! (sorry about the portulacas though)

LOL@our lawnmowers
wow how cool...kind of looks like a large rat from the back end, esp the tail.
I would plant a barrel of portulacas for them =D

They are a bit rat-looking aren't they? They're just lovely creatures though - can't plant portulacas in the outdoors garden beds anymore ... and would you believe there's one that's developed the taste for the pigface (carpobrotus glaucescens) now!!

What do they eat besides vegetation? I think they resemble rats a bit but unlike rats they are very sweet looking....

The wallabies we see are called Agile Wallabies found across northern Oz and they only really eat native grasses, introduced grasses and plant leaves - they will dig down to get the roots of grass as well. As I've said they also seem to like fleshy plants like portulacas, kalanchoes and carpobrotus.
However the wallabies that come into my yard will also eat the layer pellets we feed to the ducks!

Are they wild ones? I am supposing that they are. Do they eat other plants as well?
