Nice picture but.....I dont like these Magpies. They take all our Baby birds as soon as they hatch.Collared Doves nested twice in our Oak tree last year and they swooped as soon they hatched and the noise of the poor mother trying to defend was deafening. We are ready and waiting this year

Fabulous photo Sue. They do have their own beauty with the irridescent feathers. I suppose, like crows, they have to live too and do so by raiding other birds nests. It's sad but its life.

I think Magpies are lovely birds, we do not have them here....but we do have lots of crows...I believe in survival of the fittest...and those with best instincts will survive...I watched an eagle pair pick off 6-8 baby ducklings following their mother on the open bay..why she had them out there in that bay is beyond me...the marsh is right there...it was awful her quacking at them to duck when the eagle came and I yelled for them to duck every time too..then the eagle got help from it's mate..one would fly down and they would duck under water...when they bobbed back up the next eagle would grab them..I am not sure if even the mother survived ...it was awful to see happen..but her bad instincts will not be passed on...

Nice photo. We have magpies here, too.They are noisey and they do rob nests.
I understand what you are saying Cat, it's all part of a plan, I would be just as sad to see a fox pup die of starvation as I would be if I saw a dead bunny the mother fox brings to feed them.
So sad about the ducks. Must have been hard to watch.
