You're lucky you did get to see it grow - up here we have no chance with these beauties. We can only look at pics of them. There does seem to be something green behind the poor suffering protea so it seems the really high temps. down there didn't take out everything.

Bernie, you worry about not being able to grow proteas and I look with envy at the lush tropical gardens that you folk grow.
It was the hot air that did it. That day when the shade temperature was46C separated "the men from the boys". My Queensland bottle trees did really well and my Wollemai Pine survived ready for planting out when the weather cools.
