Smoke from the bushfires about 850KM away produces these sunsets on a clear evening.

Ditto Eileen .. glad they are some distance away and hope they are subsiding.

Another ditto. How can beauty come from such terrible things ?

Different wavelengths of light affect how much it is refracted on the atmosphere, as the sun lowers red light is refracted more and pollution particles can affect this.

When I see these stunning sunsets and think about how they happen, I always think of that line "her beauty and her terror .." Such a sunset is something to see!

Yes beauty in nature can have a more sinister side. I remember when Mount Pinatubo (Luzon, Philippines) some years back we were living in Alice Springs and the even skies were a wonderful shade of pink. Sadly I did not own a digital camera then.
