Difficult to get a good view of this clematis. It's growing over a pergola (along with some honeysuckle). This is the view from above

I cut mine back immediately after it has flowered (it is growing through honeysuckle which has usually started to sprout by then so there is a very small period when I can cut back both at the same time). I generally take all growths back by about two thirds but some shoots get cut right out.
If yours is getting out of hand, I'd suggest getting really tough and going to within a couple of buds of the old wood and then giving it a heavy feed.

I have this clematis growing up and over an arch in my garden and must admit the best view of it when in flower is from bedroom window. It is getting top heavy however so would appreciate any advice on pruning.
