Bayou Bend was the home of the Hogg siblings - Ima, Mike and Will (their father was the first native-born governor of Texas). In time only Miss Hogg lived at Bayou Bend. In 1957 she gave her estate to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The River Oaks Garden Club supervise the gardens.

Oh Raquel, I remember visiting Bayou Bend many times, it certainly is still as beautiful as ever. Do they still have an annual plant sale there? Have you ever been to that little Swiss bakery nearby? I can't remember the name but they make the best Quiche Lorraine!

Hi Wohlibuli, what little Swiss bakery??! LOL I haven't seen one nearby, not on Westcott Street anyway, which is the entrance I use....if it isn't there anymore I will be disappointed! =) I heard about the annual plant sale but so far have not been able to make it...I thought they sold plants during the azalea trail but I couldn't find it at Bayou Bend...maybe just in the other homes on the trail? Glad to bring you good memories of Bayou Bend!

My memory is kinda shaky but it was off on a small street near the main entrance and I'm pretty sure it had the word Swiss in the name. We used to go there with my mother for tea after visiting Bayou Bend. When we lived in Houston (the first time) we had a house just off Buffalo Bayou, nobody knows what you are talking about if you call something a bayou, unless they are from the area, even over here but still in the south most folks haven't got a clue! : )

Mmm...I never go near the River Oaks entrance...will have to check it out sometime! Hee hee I called the bayou "the little river" when I first moved to Houston until I was corrected by a local that it is a "bayou"!! lol Maybe the word comes from the French...it reminds me of Louisiana and southern belles and old plantations with oaks covered in moss for some reason...
