violets...May's the month

this is one of my maples. the spurge makes a mat around the base. I planted a two inch clump of violets...and look what happened!! They have naturalized really well, the daphs are completely naturalized too and spreading in their own directions..the large limb in the background was the top of a cottonwood that came down in an ice storm...it dropped with such force that the smaller limbs were driven into the semi-frozen earth about six inches...If I had my drothers the cottonwood would be gone!! A tree surgeon quoted me $600. to remove just the top...it has to come down and I don't fancy climbing up with pruners...but that seems like a lot to me.
