They do suffer a bit in heavy rain don't they? I've lost a few because of that very reason.

Yes, they do. A few of my balsams fall flat on their face ... then we prop them up and hope the winds don't blow them off ... But these days, its thunderstorms on and off.... and in certain parts of the country, the trees get uprooted ....
