I tried to get the story behind this from the lady I bought it from, but she spoke very little english. Looks like a caterpillar pupa to me though :)

Looks like a Chrysalis, perhaps a large carved butterfly will emerge :-) a bit of chinese magic

That's exactly what I thought it looked like Norfolk. I'll surely post the pic...if a large carved butterfly emerges, lol :~)
