Drastic surgery to the berberis, cotoneaster and lilac. The shrubs might grow back, but I want the much smaller! I've also started to take up turf for the new beds. Very hard to start with, then I got more of a knack to it. Still back-breaking!

You are SOOO right - there is a knack in it! It's hard going but it will be worth it.
