I love the arch Jac, fits in really well here. foot path where? you know if you do get a problem with plants drying out, you could always convert into a rock garden or something, that way your working with nature? just a thought. - it is a pain though Jac, is'nt it i have been working with the proceeds of an over zelous concrete maker in this garden too, it is unbelivable how much i have had to dig up. it's the reason that i have had so many problems at the back of the garden and it has taken so long..not to mention the foundations of an old air raid shelter or something underneath the woodland bed, luckly it is about a foot down..so like you i have left it there and just keep it well watered and avoid planting anything on top that will need deep soil. you should be ok.
