Regina - you can do all those things. I visited on two different days - a weekday and a weekend day. There were of course lots more people out on the weekend day - there is one huge area (around the lake) that's designed for families to have lunch and it was packed. There's also lots of seats everywhere so you can sit down and relax by yourself. There are lots of different garden spaces to stroll around as well. I was there both days for over 3 hours and I still didn't get to see everything! (I think I spent too much time stopping and taking photos!)
