They used to grow cabbages on this hill, mostly for making sauerkraut. This area was settled by German families in the mid-1700's.

Love sauerkraut, Toto. I spent my first 4 years growing up in Germany anyway. I buy the bottled variety made with wine. Heat it and top with a nice fat sausage, serve with a sweet mustard.... Mmmmmmm. There are still 2 local sauerkraut factories near Lunenburg, NS. They produce very different tasting products.

Maybe the one I had, which was a bottled one, was not one of the best. Perhaps I'll give another go sometime.

Well, I know a lot of people don't like it - it's an acquired taste, you have to like sour things. Over here, especially in New York I believe, street vendors serve it hot on top of hot dogs.

My wife, Jean is going to New York in early December but I bet she won't try it.

If you do a Google images search for 'hot dog sauerkraut', you'll find lots of photos. Perhaps they'll whet her appetite. It's one of those things you have to try in NY, like pretzels, or hot chestnuts as Jean's going in the winter. She might just love it!
Also see the health benefits - Yes really, they are numerous:

Have you ever eaten sauerkraut Elke. I will eat just about anything but sauerkraut is one of the few things I have tried only once.
