Found this beside the chickens area - I think one had nibbled it already. .

Yes, chicks were fine (took this photo last September) It was even prettier close up, more greeny/blue. Don't really know much about fungi...

this could be a ringed blue roundhead (stropharia aeruginosa) aka "verdigris agaric"
don't take my word for it though!
Inedible if it is that one, but I daresay chickens know what they are doing.

Wow , thanks for that, such an impressive name, can't wait to drop it into conversation with my gardening friend!! Yes, like you say animals have the instinct if something something doesn't taste right and interesting to see only one beak-size peck was missing...
