Rhododendron 'Ponticum Variegatum' - this is one of the variegated Rhodos I picked up for just £5 - I think they will look great in my new shady bit.

That sounds lovely, Lori. Rhodos are so expensive, it really is worth keeping an eye out for bargains. At the same garden centre as I got these, I got one a couple of years ago for just £3. Like yours, it had a lot of dead bits, no flower buds and was a bit lop-sided. But now it looks really healthy and has lovely delicate pink flowers (I didn't even know what colour it would be when I bought it!) So I'm sure yours will do Ok.

I bought a Rhodo...at the Home Depot over a year ago...It is partially covered with snow because it's close enough to the foundation. But there are buds on it..which I figure to be a miracle. When I bought it, it had dead branches...and brown leaves...I was worried at first that it had a virus, it only cost me $15. ( less than half the regular price) but I just couldnt leave it there to get tossed. So I brought it home, dug a nice trench for it and filled it with peat and topsoil. Pruned off the dead wood and tried to balance the root and shoot. Watered it in like mad and crossed my fingers... It grows or it goes...(my motto) I didn't coddle it with swathing and cover. it's been standing out there in the bitter cold with it's lovely buds. I sure hope it makes it. I don't know the variety but I think it said "English Pink" or English Red.
