Yes, this definitely is an onion of some sort. I vaguely remember there being one type that sprouts from the top..... Have just done some searching and they are called aerial bulbs, possibly wild garlic. apparantly it rarely reproduces by seed but does it from these aerial bulbils and bulblets underground.
