This lily was given to me by an elderly lady whose Grandfather had bought back the original from South Africa over 80 years ago.

Lovely. Does this have to overwinter indoors???

Thanks Paul for your interest I'll try and find out. She gave me this root 2 1/2 years ago and I planted it outside right away (September) and that is where its been since. This is the first year it has flowered. I think if it had to spend the winter inside I would have probably put it in a container to grow - I'm a bit forgetful when it comes to overwintering certain plants! I'm on the Suffolk coast but my garden is not exposed. Will comment again tomorrow if different :)

PS. Had a word with my lady and she brings a few in for the winter - just in case, but most are left in, and she's given away lots over the years so they must be pretty hardy.

Lovely is it a voodoo lily?

Oh, that's intersting. Thanks for finding out. It's amazing that some plants that look so exotic can be so hardy!

Yes Milky, I think it is. When it flowered a few days ago I googled Black Lily and Voodoo Lily was found and I'm sure they are the same - bit of a spooky name though!!
