It's JUST hardy in my garden, unlike the lilac version, which I have to consider as an annual. :-(

is it hardy for you Louise? I was thinking of getting some, and does it seed around like bonariensis?

I actually did a little research first before buying it ... from online sources aswell as someone in the GC i bought it from !!!
That person opens her garden under the NGS scheme and lives near the GC, her ground is similar to mine here.
Here, it's frost hardy and as tough as old boots, coping with drought, sandy and poor soil easily .... the latter being appropriate where it is !
In wet soil treat as an annual though .... it'll die if its feet are wet and cold.
On your shale i'd have a go :)
I like it so much i'm thinking of getting more, i've seen it around recently so .... :))
(i deadhead mine, don't know about the seeds)

I have some seeds of it, so I think I'll have a go and see what happens, if it's not successful I can always buy a plant in the spring :)

I've just spoken with a friend who has it and she says yes, they do self sow !

I think mine has, in the back garden...I thought at first that it had 'run', but now you've mentioned seedlings, that must be what they are. :-)

I planted two of these this year in pots and the butterflies love them, also smaller bumblebees.
