Striping Lawns With A Roller Lawn-Mower

We now work and live in a walled garden surrounded by 12 foot walls and all set in a total of 4 acres. In my opinion the main attraction is this beautiful Vista. Striped Lawns stretching 280 feet from top to the first set of steps. This whole area is hand mowed with our Honda Rotary Lawnmower as seen in Garden Photos prior to mowng this area, strimming around stumps, trees, and depressions, total area 2.5 acres. We mow this and other areas by hand, due to irregular grass surface, roots and stumps.
Creating Mowing Stripes over this distance by hand has been a challenge due to roots and uneven ground, we do have the use of a John Deere Ride On Lawnmower, unfortunately the ground has high roots from Catalpa Bignonioides Aurea (Indian Bean Trees) flanking the vista with Yew Trees, also Ride on Mowers are to wide in cut to offer a sympathetic look. Creating the desired effect in our opinion requires hands on hard work to achieve your end result, strimming and hand Mowing the whole area (2.5 Acres) 1 hectare offers the desired effect whilst being in proportion with the vista.
Mowing Lawns combined with all Gardening husbandry is not F1 Racing, It's an investment of time, cost, hard work and patience!

Stripes should appear automatically if you have a roller on your lawn mower Michaella. If you have a roller but not very good stripes then this will be because your mower isn't heavy enough. I use a heavy honda mower similar to the one in the photo above and it produces lovely stripes.

Scotkat and I are now working on the restoration of the walled garden at Glamis castle us two. Sadly, we are neither paid, nor homed, as we are volunteers supporting the head gardener, but you might be I the rested in what we are doing. Our garden is also 4 acres, but not like yours as it was empty of all but glasshouses (falling down) and now a central fountain and some empty, but filling up borders with a hemlock hedge. It's interesting to see your walled garden for comparison!

Love the stripes...I can never achieve stripes with any of the mowers I have had...even this new one which is supposed to makes stripes easier...
