Richard - I first saw this growing in its native South America where it makes a tree. Over here, with our colder winters, it behaves as a woody perennial
Meanie - yes, it is. I previously grew one for a couple of years planted out in less than ideal conditions but a cold/wet winter did for it. Now it is in well-drained soil in full sun so hopefully will do better
