Meanie - it's acanthus sennii. Great foliage but the leaves are horrendously prickly even when dead. Brilliant scarlet flowers in late autumn but only after a hot summer.

It flowered in October last year. As we have had hot weather here in balmy Berkshire this summer, I'm hoping it will do it again this year.
