What is it growing through Andrew?

Meanie - it's acanthus sennii. Great foliage but the leaves are horrendously prickly even when dead. Brilliant scarlet flowers in late autumn but only after a hot summer.

Thanks Andrew. Googled it and it deffo qualifies for a wow if it blooms!

It flowered in October last year. As we have had hot weather here in balmy Berkshire this summer, I'm hoping it will do it again this year.
