Andrew, we have just spent a few days in and around Exeter, an area you know well, if I remember correctly. Along the seafront at Budleigh Salterton was a coastal cottage with a mass planting of these Gladilolus ... wonderful sight on a grey day. :o)

These are planted with gladiolus tristis (which is just starting to go over), allium atropurpureum (which will overlap as these start to fade), and all growing through purple sage.
