Gralew - a physical barrier in the soil is really the only way to stop it. Either a VERY large plastic flowerpot, with the bottom cut off, and sunk in the ground. Or you can get plastic lawn edging strips (I bought some called Hammeredge several years ago) and encircle it with that.

Thanks Andrew, we have some green plastic edging somewhere in our shed, will try some of that.
