I prefer this to the black and regret planting it now. It may well be uprooted soon ...

Andrew, I have just gone to look at the black grass and am thrilled to see it has lilac flowers on it! That's a first for mine which was planted in April 2013. It can stay after all ...

Shirley, how could you not like the black mondo grass, interesting without the purple flowers. Saw a whole border edging of it at Bressingham, absolutely stunning.

It will also grow in bone dry soil. I planted some in the corner of my foliage garden under next door's conifer, and even the bit I forgot to plant survived!

Andrew, perhaps it's more effective en-masse. I do have about five small clumps of it around the edge of a low brick edging so maybe I should try for more!

small question: Is this the black grass which has become invasive in farmers fields?

Lori, I really have no idea about that.

saw mention of black grass infestation in a barley (?) field, on here somewhere but typically I can't recall exactly where I saw it..or who was mentioning it. or even if it is the same "black grass"... ah me... gettin' old.

I have a variegated one, came with the name of "little Tabby", white flowers also, mine seems a more compact plant, but increases easily.
