nice.....but plums are one of my favourite fruits so I could never have a non-edible plum tree! :))

All my trees are non edible to humans but they provide food for the birds.

Hmmm. yes...well.... don't speak to me about providing food for the birds Denise, They are pinching all my strawbs!!

Oh thats a shame K

I know! What with the baskets, the plants, the compost and the four windmills....I think I could have bought two punnets a day for the whole season and I'm getting about one for every one berry they pinch! That's with the baskets on the house wall right beside the conservatory and dining room window. They get up far too early and sneak them before I rise!!....oh well....sigh....off to Tescos tomorrow!! ;)

No matter how early i rise the birds are always up first. Perhaps you need a cage?

14 Jul, 2010

Yup, I've come to the conclusion that if you want to grow any fruit, you need a cage! First an allotment of course, and then definitely a cage! Funny though, they have not taken a single gooseberry off my gooseberry bush! But yes, I'm chucking the towel in on strawbs. Absolute waste of time and money. Had my first tomato though today and boy was it tasty!! I'm really chuffed as this is my third attempt, previous results having been watery and bitter! Discovered I was overfeeding them....courtesy of Alys Fowler in gardening mag! Nice one Alys!

My toms are not good this year only just got flowers

Well, mine are not what you would call prolific either Denise....I think the variations in temperature here have done them no good at all. Only about three fruits on each truss.
