can you prune a magnolia tree

we have a large magnolia tree and have never attempted to prune it please could anyone advise if it is possible

Extract from one of my gardening encyclopaedias:
Cut back untidy plants and remove dead wood in late summer, or after flowering for deciduous species and in spring for evergreens. Hard prune only mature specimens; do this in Spring. Hope that helps.

Previous question
I prune mine when i think it's getting too big, the only downside to pruning, Is that you may lose the following years flowers, or depending on how hard you prune, have less flowers.
